(PTI Photo) MUMBAI: Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) chairman Lalchand Rajput on Friday complained to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Vijay Patil that “certain people” are using legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s name to recommend candidates to his committee for the posts of Mumbai’s selectors and coaches.
Rajput and his colleagues in the CIC, Raju Kulkarni and Sameer Dighe, interviewed 24 coaches for various age group teams of Mumbai at BKC on Wednesday and Thursday, and will conduct interview potential selectors on Saturday.
In a stinging e-mail (TOI has a copy) to Patil, Rajput, a former India opener, has written: “We respect Tendulkar, but his name is used unnecessary everywhere to put pressure (on us) that he has recommended X, Y and Z. If Sachin has to make any recommendations he can directly talk to the President and CIC as we all know him very well. Tendulkar is an icon and we respect him. I’m sure that if he has any suggestions, he has every right to put his views across to us.”
Rajput has alleged that Apex Council member Amit Dani asked him to pick certain candidates for the jobs. “I am always open for suggestions and they are always welcome but Dani cannot tell me that I should include X or Y. I have not liked it. If anyone would like to know the names, I have got them with me but I don’t want to reveal it here. Now I know why Mumbai cricket is going down. Being an Apex Council member, they can throw their weight around and get things done. We as the CIC will not allow these things to happen, and that’s why the AGM has given a mandate for us to function as an independent committee which looks after cricketing matters which are in our framework,” Rajput said.
“Before shortlisting the coaches for interview, we made a framework on who will be called for the interview, and that framework is with the MCA. The same thing has been done for the selectors too as well and sent to the president for approval,” Rajput said.
Dani, however, denied Rajput’s allegation. “I never ever mentioned Tendulkar’s name to recommend candidates. Why should I do that? I Will never take his name in the wrong context. If he feels the need to say something, he can tell the MCA directly, he doesn’t need me. It’s just a misunderstanding between me and CIC. I’m ready to clear it out with them,” he told TOI.
“Regarding the need for a convenor during the interviews, I only said that if the MCA constitution mandates the need for a convenor, then he should be there,” he added.
