2020 NBA Playoffs: Lakers vs. Rockets odds, picks, Game 2 predictions from model on 60-33 roll

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers take on James Harden and the Houston Rockets in Game 2 on Sunday night. After a Game 1 win by the Rockets, the Lakers will look to even the best-of-seven series, with James and Anthony Davis leading the way.  James (groin), Davis (finger) and Rajon Rondo (back) are listed as probable for Los Angeles, with Houston reporting no injuries for Game 2.

Why the Lakers can cover

The Lakers have strong units on both ends of the floor, beginning with the presence of James and Davis. Davis is the team’s leading scorer to this point in the playoffs, averaging 29.0 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, and the Rockets are giving up considerable size and length against him. James, averaging 26.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 9.7 assists per game in the playoffs, remains one of the best players in the NBA, and he is also a defensive weapon.

On the offensive side, the Lakers can bludgeon the Rockets on the glass, with Los Angeles ranking in the top six of the NBA in offensive rebounding and the Rockets ranking 29th in defensive rebounding during the regular season. Defensively, the Lakers are tremendous, allowing only 1.06 points per possession during the regular season. Los Angeles is also a top-three team in the NBA in turnover rate, forcing a giveaway on 15.8 percent of possessions this season.

Why the Rockets can cover

Harden was tremendous in Game 1, scoring 36 points and converting 60 percent of his shot attempts. While the Lakers do have defensive firepower, Harden is one of the NBA’s best offensive players, averaging 30.5 points and 7.6 assists per game in the postseason. He is flanked by Russell Westbrook, who averaged 27.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game in the regular season.

Defensively, the Rockets are playing their best basketball of the season, leading the NBA Playoffs in defensive rating. Houston is giving up only 1.01 points per possession and, with a league-leading mark in steals at 9.8 per game, the Rockets can cause havoc against any opponent.

How to make Lakers vs. Rockets picks

SportsLine’s model is leaning over on the total, with both Davis and James projected to exceed their season-long scoring averages for Los Angeles. The model also says one side of the spread hits well over 50 percent of the time. You can only get the pick at SportsLine.
