Riverside opens parks to gyms, churches during coronavirus pandemic – Press Enterprise

Gyms and fitness centers — along with houses of worship — have the green light to use Riverside parks while coronavirus rules continue to restrict their operations.

In a 7-0 vote, Riverside leaders on Tuesday, Sept. 1, approved a proposal by City Councilman Ronaldo Fierro and City Councilwoman Erin Edwards to let gyms stage exercise classes in parks, without paying fees.

The Riverside City Council previously provided a way for gyms — along with restaurants, retail stores and other businesses — to move outside their doors onto sidewalks, plazas and parking lots.

However, said Edwards, “you can’t hold classes on a hot sidewalk or in a hot parking lot.”

At the urging of Mayor Rusty Bailey, the Riverside City Council also decided to let churches and other religious groups host services in parks.
