Rocksteady Reveals ‘Suicide Squad,’ Its First Post-Arkham DC Game, Raising Questions

Suicide Squad

Anticipation has been building for five years as everyone has waited to see what the next DC game from Rocksteady will be after the famed Arkham series. And the recent rumors and leaks were true, it is in fact a Suicide Squad game, as revealed by tweet this morning.

The image shows Superman with a target on his head, the caption being “Target locked.”

This aligns with earlier reporting that this game might be called Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, based on a previously registered domain name. Now, even if the game is not called that, it certainly seems like killing the Justice League is on the agenda, judging by this first teaser. I am guessing that we will see other “target” posters like this with other heroes on them, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc.

It’s an interesting concept, and in theory, the idea would seem to be that the “bosses” of the game are the heroes of the Justice League, flipping the usual formula of an endless parade of supervillains on its head, which is what we experienced in the Arkham games.

But the game being focused on the Suicide Squad raises a lot of interesting questions.

First, who would be starring? Over the years, the Suicide Squad has featured many, many villains. The most prominent of which these days would be Deadshot and Harley Quinn, stars of the Suicide Squad DCEU movie. Harley has been featured in Arkham games previously, and she is kind of having a “moment” right now between Margot Robbie’s portrayal and her amazing DC Universe animated series. She’s an easy potential pick.

But other choices? In the past the Suicide Squad has featured the likes of Joker, Doctor Light, Enchantress, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, Bronze Tiger, Killer Frost, Captain Boomerang, Cheetah, King Shark and many, many more.

This raises an obvious question. Is this a multiplayer game? Are we getting into Crystal Dynamics Avengers territory here as you roll out with a Suicide Squad…squad? It would be kind of weird to have the “team dynamic” without this, and it’s hard to see an entire game just having you be say, Harley Quinn, while supported by NPCs. The idea of a Suicide Squad game really does scream multiplayer from the outset, which would obviously be a wild departure from Arkham.

The teaser shows when we will see the game debut, August 22 at the DC FanDome event (obviously all virtual). This was always the likely plan but yes, I would expect to see some more teasers like this Superman one as we get closer. I have no idea what Rocksteady is going to do with this concept, but it seems pretty exciting, and probably more so than them just announcing a Superman game or something would have.
